This year, The Stony Brook School is returning to Toulouse, France for its spring break mission trip. Toulouse, aka La Ville Rose (The Pink City), is France’s fourth largest city and is bursting with culture, art, and history all its own. It is a beautiful and diverse city located in the far southwest of France, just a few hours from the borders of Andorra and Spain. It’s geographical location is exactly what creates some unique opportunities for us.
Toulouse stands right in the path of many refugees and migrants making their way from impoverished or war-torn countries and seeking shelter and opportunities in Europe. We will partner with long term missionaries and local churches to serve and care for those immigrants still trying to find their way to a new life in Europe.
Also notable is that Toulouse houses one of the largest universities in France and a massive aeronautical industry. Like the rest of France, Toulouse is a post-Christian culture, meaning it has a rich Christian history, but today people are often highly resistant to the gospel. (Fun fact: Thomas Aquinas is buried in Toulouse.) Sharing the gospel in a meaningful way here is best done by someone who can be patient and grace-filled. But no matter how the message is received, the truth is no less important.

Refugees from areas of North Africa, Syria, Albania, Serbia, and many more have established communities in Toulouse and made it their home. On this trip, we will partner with a team of long term missionaries who are working to establish churches among these groups and provide resources, assistance, and ultimately the gospel as a true source of hope.
Our goal is to serve the local ministries on the ground who are working to make the Christian church a trusted place where all can find help and hope, regardless of one’s religious background. There are a number of ways we’ll be able to do this, including relational evangelism, community outreach to the immigrant community, college campus outreach, service projects, and kids programs. Everything we do will revolve around building relationships and representing Christ to people throughout Toulouse.
Many of the people we will be interacting with and sharing the gospel with are Muslim. So, we, as a team, will be preparing for this trip by deepening our understanding of Islamic beliefs and seeking the most effective ways to break down barriers between Islam and Christianity. We will establish friendships, demonstrate love and empathy, and present the gospel from the perspective of grace and hope.
The idea of surrendering your entire life-living fully in obedience and worship to the one living God-may not always be easy to hear or to communicate. But, it is powerful. It can change lives and bring hope to those who are truly lost. Has Christ made a difference in your life? Then you have something very special to offer the people of Toulouse. Now’s your chance!
Many details will take time to work out as we draw closer to the trip, but we are excited to continue the work we started last year!
We will cook many of our meals ourselves. We’ll hit the markets and grocery stores, keeping our meals simple and our stomachs full. But make no mistake, some of the world’s best breads, pastries, cheeses, produce, and cured meats await you in France. We’ll make sure there is plenty of opportunity to hit up the local bistros, petit cafés, and patisseries in our down time.
During our time in France, we will sleep in a hotel or rented apartment located in the heart of the city with lots of shopping, food, and activity all around. Lodging will come with the bedding you need, electrical outlets, towels, and meeting spaces. Local transportation will be our main way of getting anywhere our feet can’t take us. But, plan for a lot of walking, long days, chilly weather, and stepping out of your comfort zone.
This team is for The Stony Brook School students, grades 7-12, ages 12-18. If you like to travel, experience new things, and have a desire to grow in your faith and your ability to share your faith with others, then this a great opportunity for you. You don’t have to be a professional evangelist or a flawless Christian. This will be a chance to practice talking about your faith with other people, building new relationships, and gaining some new ministry skills. God calls us all to care about the needs of others in this world. Sometimes that’s sharing the gospel with them, or sometimes that’s offering help and resources that they need. Both can be intimidating and scary. We believe that with some practice and help, you may experience the thrill and rewards that come with stepping out and sharing your faith with someone who needs to know that Jesus is real. No need to wait around anymore for the perfect opportunity. This is it! And if you speak any French or Arabic, parfait!
While fundraising can be a daunting task and the idea of asking people to help you cover the cost of this trip might be intimidating to you, we believe that there are many people out there who know you and would love the chance to invest into something so worthwhile. It is an amazing experience to see God provide for an opportunity like this through the people in your life. We can help you figure out how to get the word out and show people you are ready to serve God in France. We will gather and depart The Stony Brook School on Saturday morning, February 15. We will travel as a group to John F. Kennedy Airport in New York City for our afternoon flight. The team will return to JFK on Tuesday, February 25, where you can be picked up by your family at the airport or catch a connecting flight home. The team will be led by two staff from Reign Ministries, as well as one or two Stony Brook School faculty members.
The cost of the mission trip is $2190. This cost covers airfare, food, lodging, and transportation once the team arrives in France. The cost also covers a group t-shirt, a duffel pack for your luggage, and limited international travel insurance. Please note that recommended $100 spending money is not included in the cost of this trip and is the responsibility of the participant.
The deadline to sign up is December 1, 2019. Once your online registration is complete and we receive your $200 deposit, we will send you a Prep Packet that will contain all the info you need to prepare for the trip. In order for us to purchase your airfare to France, the first $875 is due December 23, 2019 (which will include your $200 deposit), and then the remaining cost of the trip is due February 2, 2020.
